  • The term came from Ancient Rome where the guys usually fell asleep after 2 minutes of sex. Haha! No I'm kidding.
  • Well it used to be called "knowing" someone - which didn't work so well either, sleeping is slightly better as there is usually sleeping involved afterwards, but it still means that most of us can truthfully state that we have slept with our parents, siblings, pets, friends and various inanimate objects. (An idea exploited by Tracey Emin in her piece "Everyone I Ever Slept With") The thing is, whilst we still insist on being embarrassed about sex we need to have some form of non-dirty-sounding euphemistic way of say "We shoved various body parts into each other's orifices."
  • It's a colloquialism. It probably arose from the fact that most cultures find publicly discussing sex as unseemly or even downright wrong. People found a way to talk about something uncomfortably improper in a public forum by using a "go around" phrase. It's related, in a very real way, to how we have labeled the animals we eat. Cows and bulls become "beef", baby cows and bulls become "veal", Bambi becomes "venison" and Wilbur (or Babe, for you later-generational readers) becomes "pork". We often give "cutesy" or less offensive names to things we can't "stomach".
  • Because that's what you want your kids to think you're doing, and that's also what they want to think you're doing.
  • "sleeping" makes slander polite enough for society.
  • I thought it was a euphemism: A euphemism is an expression intended by the speaker to be less offensive, disturbing, or troubling to the listener than the word or phrase it replaces, or in the case of doublespeak to make it less troublesome for the speaker. I personally like "screwing" or "f'ing" as that is what it is. I am the kind of a person that feels "it is what it is". I guess the activity usually takes place in a bed and sleeping done in a bed has made the expression what it is today. Or we could get really clincial and say "having relations" "having intercourse".
  • I think some of you took the question WAY to seriously.
  • Because 99% of missionary is done in the same device and with the same vigor.
  • It's just a euphemism, or polite expression. Generally, though, at the conclusion of sex, people fall asleep, and usually, although not always, both activities take place in a bed.
  • Marriage?
