When you look back over the way you have treated them and have no regrets. You love them and care for them, looking after them when they are sick. You clothe them and feed them and provide a safe home environment. You make a fuss of them for their birthdays and christmas, as much about the joy of being a family as the expense of the presents. You encourage them to grow in confidence and take responsibility for themselves so that, in time, you can hand them the reins and let them steer their own course. You wait on the sidelines to cheer them on when they succeed and to catch them when they fall. You do all of this to the best of your ability with whatever resources you have. When they are grown if you have done a good job they will be your friends.
