  • Great Q, Mastodon, old chap! Pain means pain receptors, and/or nerves, and I can't think of anything that is not an animal that can feel pain besides HUMANS, of course. No evolution please!
  • Scientists know that most organisms can feel something because almost all of them will respond when touched unless they are in a suspended state (hibernation) . Most organisms have not been tested for the full gamut of stimuli (pain, pleasure, et. al.). Microscopic studies of an organism's "skin" reveals little in the way of nerve endings. Whether the painful stimuli is experienced as pain is still unknown.
  • well i seem to remember a t-shirt brand known as "no brain no pain"... they might be right... without nerves and something to distinguish them from pleasure i doubt it
  • A part from humans and animals others have not been tested yet, so it is very difficult to say if insects or others feel pain. Regards.
  • Unless the organism has a nervous system it is very doubtful.
  • Yes, organisms other than animals may feel sensations that we would call pain. Pain is defined as ""an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage" Pain is an evolved mechanism that plays a strong role in the negative reinforcement of behaviors that would be detrimental to the survival or health of an organism, and the presence of pain receptors is seen in many higher organisms. Bacteria cannot of course feel pain, but so long as the organism has a sensory system and is able to distinguish between a "good" and a "bad" sensation, then we can say that it has the potential to feel pain as defined above. • Um, yes. No. I think so. Can I have a hint?
  • Depends on your definition of pain and your understanding that pain is not a real thing. It is an interpretation by our brain of specific stimuli. It's reasonable to state that no two people experience pain identically, as we have non-identical nervous systems and adrenal responses. There is always some variance. So do other organisms experience pain in the way that higher-order animals, with advanced nervous systems, do? No. Do all organisms display physiological response to physical, chemical and temperature insults? Almost universally yes.
