I used to get depressed during the holiday season when I was in retail management. I also used to get depressed when I was young, mistakenly thinking other people were having more fun than me. Now, I rather enjoy the lights and the festivites, without getting too involved in the obligations of the holiday season and having too many expectations of what "should" happen.

I don't think the end of the year has a monopoly on feeling blue. Probably the lack of daylight may put me in a funk. Since I am not wrapped up (pardon the pun) in all the holiday stuff, it doesn't effect me one way or another. People put unrealistic demands on themselves during the holiday season to be some sort of dynamo and that can lead to frustration. Fortunately, I don't have a big family and I don't have many friends so I am not obiligated to get together and I am not expected to exchange gifts.

It's sad to see how many important days in our history have turned into a marketer's paradise. So many people enjoy the holidays because they get big expensive gifts and don't have to remember the symbolic meaning of that day.

Yes it does. It is time for family, and to be honest I would be better off without the majority (excluding my mum and sister, of course). It is also my birthday, which is one of two things me and my dad have in common (genes and we were born on the same day). This year depresses me the most, because I'm spending my birthday alone, and new year at my uncles, and I cannot think of anything worse
