Where did the saying "stuck between a rock and a hard place", come from?

    The origin of this quote is from ancient Greece. There were beleived to be two monsters in a river. One was Scylla, who attacked ships with many heads, the other was Charybdis who would create whirlpools and swallow ships whole.

    The ships would be forced to sail closer to one of the two monsters. sailors were "torn between scylla and charybdis." Over time i suppose it has just changed... =]
