Not sure what you mean by "high level business career". My father served in the Navy. It was this training that got him his job as an engineer at General Motors. In 1973 his salary was over $70,000 per year. I didn't keep in contact much with him after that, but he retired with a very healthy pension. I don't think he "forfeited" anything with his military training.

I don't know from corporate ladder climbing (even though I own my own business) but I would just say a job in any combat arms field is it's own reward. If you want to have a sheepskin on the wall, go to college.
