Planning cross-country trip with dog (med.-sized). We want to enjoy scenery but need pet-friendly places to spend the night. Going from RI to San Diego, with stop near Yellowstone (family). Suggestions on routes, sites & accommodations allowing dogs?

If you're into roughing it a little bit you can plan your route and all of your stays around KOA locations. They have a travel planner at their website that will show you all of the KOAs along the way as well as contact info for each one. Many of them have cabins you can rent so you don't have to pitch a tent. http://www.koa.com/ I did that to go from Monterey, CA to Columbia, SC. We had our boxer/pit bull mix along with us.
