Almost any decent 35mm camera... BTW: My photography classes did black and white film, but that was YEARS ago.

Digital SLR's (DSLR's) are a great entrypoint for a beginner. A DSLR is better to learn with than film because every photo is instant and "free", while with film you must pay for developing and printing. So you can shoot thousands of frames with very little cost. Pretty much any DSLR is great for a photo course; the technology is pretty much matured and the differences between the brands are slight. Nikon D40, Canon Rebel series, Pentax KM/K2000, all are great cameras under US$1000. Go to your local camera store and see which you like best.
