  • "i've been better, yourself?"
  • Its weird, I honestly never even think about it anymore, if anyone asks that, my automatic response is "Good, how are you?". I don't even think about it.
  • Just give them the short version and keep it upbeat. "oh, I'm having a bit of a rough day, but it'll get better. How are you?"
  • I am honest with my answer whoever the person is as I don't like to say 'I'm fine thank you' when I'm not. if the person wont be interested in your well being just say 'i'm ok thanks but could be better'. I prefer people to be honest with me too otherwise we are all hiding are feelings and behave like robots.
  • Basically people only ask that questions for two reasons. ONE: just to be polite (as you are casing). Then even if you aren't THAT great, just say you're "fine". That's it. No reason to tell them that you aren't doing well, then it becomes uncomfortable not only for them, but for you as well. Unless you are in situation TWO: They really care...
  • Like others before me responded, most just ask expecting a "I'm fine." If I'm not, I'll say something like, "I've been better." It's being truthful without offering your life's dissertation. :-)
  • Come up with a semi-humorous catch phrase that puts people at ease and keeps them from asking prying questions. "Living the dream. You?" "Eeeeexcellent!" "Just peachy!" I'll admit though that my typical response is a lot more dry: "I'm functional." or: "I'm upright."
