The string section of an orchestra frequently divides, so that they can play separate lines. The first violins tend to play the top lines, and the seconds play the lower ones. But in fact the violins can divide into many more than two lines. In Chronochromie by Olivier Messiaen, there is a long section in which each of the 22 strings plays a separate, independent line.
