I suspect it was intended as a symbolic act of cannibalism, and indeed, that is how it is treated by certain versions of Christianity. But I would imagine some would argue that it means that you should absorb the teachings of Christ so thoroughly that they become part of you. Who knows? The ancient texts are capable of so many different interpretations, there is no knowing what the original intent might have been. I was reading another posting on AB in which they said that the original Greek word referring to the object on which crucifixion took place, didn't just mean 'cross' - it also meant 'stake'. When something so basic is in doubt, then you can make the words mean anything at all - which is what seems to have happened over the centuries.

verses 60 & 61, tell us Jesus knew they were having a hard time understanding....HE Clarifies in 62-64. "Does this offend you? 62 Then what will you think if you see me, the Messiah, return to heaven again? Only the Holy Spirit gives eternal life. Those born only ONCE, with physical birth, will NEVER receive this gift. But now I HAVE TOLD YOU HOW TO GET THIS TRUE SPIRITUAL LIFE.But some of you do not believe me."(For Jesus knew from the beginning who didn't believe and knew the one, Judas, who would betray HIM.) to me , HE is saying you have to BELIEVE, REPENT and be BAptized in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit..and Walk...the only way to a True Spiritual Life and Eternal Life.... even HIS Apostles did not understand HIM FULLY yet....even until after HIS ASCENSION...Thomas was still doubting.....Peter still wasn't confident when he denied HIM 3 times.... hope this helps ...

That's a very important section, since verse 63 in that series of verses explains that Jesus was NOT talking about PHYSICAL blood when he was speaking about his blood, so it puts his comment just before the crucifixion (My blood is poured out for all mankind) into its proper context. It demonstrates that Jesus was NOT speaking of physical blood or the crucifixion as so many would want you to believe. The theme of that Original Gospel was a Spiritual theme. This online resource will explain the whole thing... including the series of verses you mention here. http:gospelenigma.com That free e-book is a great help in putting all these verses back into their original context, and it will fully answer your very important question as well.
