Back then, radar was more about defence then attacking. The radars on the British shore warned for enemy planes. Therefore they didn't need lots of planes to patrol the coastline, only a quick taskforce standing by. This saved fuel, and less planes were needed. Those planes could now be used for attacking targets on the other side of the channel and escorting bombers.
