  • Does there have to be a purpose? Could it not be that we simply are here? Personally I do not think we were 'placed' here for any 'purpose'. We just are - and being alive is quite nice, especially when compared with the alternative...

  • "Purpose" is a man-made concept. It doesn't relate to anything objectively measurable anywhere in the universe. It's just a tool of abstraction that we use to understand and describe what goes on around us. The only time we can objectively speak of purpose is when there's an intention behind something. An intention can only be had by something intelligent, and since so far nothing indicates that we were put on Earth by anything intelligent, it would seem that you're asking the wrong question.
  • The answer is...No one really knows, we can make up all the theories why, but we still won't really know.
  • You haven't met some of my friends. They're not what you could call "earth-bound" at all...especially on week-ends! One is, though, but he works for an outfit what does a lotta randoms! :-)

  • There is no purpose outside our own making. We, perhaps uniquely in the universe, have the luxury or the curse to be able to devise our own purpose. +5

  • It seems quite clear from several of the answers here, that the truth of why we are here is either being totally ignored or unknown. The latter can be known but is usually not pursued by those who live by their own moral standards. They fear the idea that there may just be a higher standard by which we must live and they fear the idea of God because, then, they would have to give up their immoral lifestyle and become responsible for their own actions and answer to a higher power. I cringed at some of these answers that conveyed that we have no ultimate purpose. The larger point is sorely missed by those philosophers who try to build an escape hatch for the skeptic by saying that it is meaningless to ask the questions of life's meaning. The lonliest moment in life is when you have just experienced what you thought would deliver the ultimate, and it has let you down. Ever have that experience? I have. Now, on to the issue of meaning or purpose, the naturalist (atheist, agnostic, evolutionist) says that what applies to the parts (rolling stones, building temples, etc), is meaningful, but doesn't apply to life as a whole. So what you end up with is a life punctuated with tiny little purposes and no ultimate purpose; tiny little values, but no ultimate values. Great thinkers have repeatedly warned over the centuries that a departure from God denudes humans and results in the death of meaning. The denial of God and the death of meaning cannot be severed from each other, though interspersed with all the learning, education, and hyperactivity of postmodern human beings. The further we move from God, the more we devalue man. What is our purpose? For God's pleasure.” Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.” Colossians 1:16 reiterates the point: “All things were created by Him and for Him.” Being made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), human beings have the ability to know God—and therefore love Him, worship Him, serve Him, and fellowship with Him. God did not create human beings because He needed them. As God, He needs nothing. In all eternity past, He felt no loneliness, so He was not looking for a “friend.” He loves us, but this is not the same as needing us. If we had never existed, God would still be God—the Unchanging One (Malachi 3:6). Recognizing the complete sovereignty and holiness of God, we are amazed that He would take man and “crown him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5), and that He would condescend to call us “friends” (John 15:14-15). That is our purpose.

  • To work for the rich Be slaves for the rich And for the rich to destroy the earth once they die so no one else can enjoy it.
  • the very subject in which this question is posted is contrary to your question. If we were evolved from other forms you would ask why, and where we are going. If we were always souls put into human existance, maybe there is a creator. And I don't know why.
  • We are here to procreate.
  • To live and die, as we are intended.
  • Doe we have to have a purpose? That is a classic teleological statement. If we had a purpose it would be the continuation of our DNA through procreation therefore getting as close as we can to a state of immortality and life after death. That would be the basic materialistic reason.
  • If you're looking for a vitalistic answer then i can't give you one, because i don't think there's a real reason.
  • there is no more reason for our species to exist than any other, The fact that we can contemplate this question, only means we are at a different level of consciousness. Nothing more.
  • It is my belief that the reason humanity evolved is due to Darwinian natural selection, with a twist. The Earth evolved humans, with all of their self-destructive power, to defend her. If you accept the Gaia hypothesis, that the earth is a living being as a whole, it is the only answer that makes sense. Our role is to defend our home, Earth. That also means, as defenders, we have evolved to defend the creatures on it. It is certainly within the realm of possibility, almost a mathematical certainty, that a large space object will collide with Earth at some point. Humans will have to prevent that. Which means we need to stop practicing destruction on each other (which destroys Earth) and create sustainable technologies to continue to guarantee our time on Earth, to defend it. We should probably also consider our role, since only we can direct the destiny of all the other creatures, that we should stop our cruelty toward them. We have to stop killing each other and, of course, stop killing the animals (children of Earth) for food and clothing. If, in fact, we have evolved beyond that. I think so. Our brains just need to catch up to the ethical implications of our technologies. - Dr. Wolf Shipon
  • procreation
  • To try to make it as nice as possible for me while i'm here.
  • Apparently to annoy and destroy one another. I think we're doing a he** of a job, don't you? :( Happy Wednesday to you! :)
  • TO SURVIVE AND BETTER OURSELVES BY MAKING EARTH AN ADVANCED PLANET. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE WE WERE'NT ORIGINALLY FROM EARTH. MY THOUGHTS ARE THAT WE ARE BLUE BLOODED, BUT WHEN CUT THE AIR TURNS THE BLOOD TO RED. LOOK AT YOUR VEINS THE BLOOD RUNNING THROUGH THEM ARE BLUE. ALSO ALOT OF HISTORY ABOUT HOW WE EVOLVED, MY BELIEF IS THOSE THAT HAD DEGREES CAME UP WITH A THEORY AND SINCE THERE WAS'NT ANYONE TO CONTEST IT. THEN OUR HISTORY BOOKS SHOW THEIR THOUGHTS AND NOT THE TRUTH. RECENTLY OTHER THEORIES AND BONES FOUND TO BE 25,000 YEARS OLD. NOW IF OUR SPECIES WERE HERE 25,000 YEARS AGO. THEN THAT WOULD SHOW OUR HISTORY BOOKS TO BE FALSE.
  • the same purpose a grain of sand, a tree, a platypus have....to be what they are.
  • To wonder what the hell the purpose of our existences are.
  • To worship and give God praise.
  • As the sole sentient, tool-making species on the planet, it is our responsibility to nurture and protect all living things. I only hope we've learned this lesson in time.
  • Hey u r born, u eat a few knishes, and then u drop dead. U have no purpose, but you do have a chance to make things better for yourself or others. What r u doing with ur chance? As for me, I'm building up my energy to try and go in the right science based direction.
