If someone says to you that they have 'committed suicide' (but they're not being literal) what would you think they meant?

he/she probably made a big mistake and its ruining his/her life.

That they're getting rid of all their demons, coming terms to the past and moving on.

I think that there's no way that can be literal. ; ) Maybe they're implying that they decided to abandon a former way of life, and wish to start a new one on a clean slate.

I would say it means making a irreversible mistake, something that can't be explained away!
