Pfifferdaj (French name: Fete des Menetriers) is an Alsatian holiday. Alsace is a region of France that lies on the border with Germany and has been traded back and forth between the two countries throughout history. While it is part of France, they speak a regional langage (Alsatian) that is very like German, and their food/cultural customs are very Germanic. Anyway... Pfifferdaj, as it's called in Alsatian, is celebrated on the first Sunday of September and has been since the 14th century. The celebrations center on the town of Ribeauville in Alsace. It is essentially a festival that celebrates medieval traveling musicians. The story goes that the traveling musicians made a pilgrimage to Ribeauville every year to renew the contract that gave them permission to practice their trade. They considered the local lord a patron because one of his ancestors had been particularly kind to a flute (or fife?) player in the past. Now it's an occasion for lots of music, drinking wine, and celebration. I've seen pictures of locals dressed up in traditional, medieval costume as well.
