I often try to keep in mind that tone-of-voice is very hard to convey through the typewritten word. I have been involved in huge miscommunications online and know it all too well. It's very important for the reader to keep in mind that their first reaction to something they've read may not be the way the message was meant. Both sides of the conversation need to be careful in their implications and inferences.
