Speaking in tongues happens when, in christianity, the holy spirit enters the body. The person who experiences it may speak out in a language that he neither knows or has ever heard. If there is a god who works in ways that the church insists then yes, I do believe in it. However, I haven't seen with my own eyes or heard with my own ears anything that could convince me that a god exists.

It has been promoted on talk shows like Jim Baker and the ones who have been not so honest with the money people send in, so by assocaition, I think it is probably a hoax. I have known people who got into it for a time, but then got away from it.... so it appeas not to be a good thing. The Holy Spirit would be becoming familiar with God's Spirit which is unseen and would have a good effect on a person... bringing the light of God into their lives. This resoruce explains what it takes to be in the light of God. http://gospelenigma.com That same online book explains that anything from God has to improve your life for the better. "By their fruits ye shall know them." And that quote from Jesus is just good common sense as well.

I believe in it..God gives you the gift of the holy spirit, and one of the signs of the holy spirit is speaking in tongues

Read First Corinthians Chapter 12. It talks about spiritual gifts which speaking in tongues is one. It is the gift of speaking in a language that you don't know. I've heard people doing it when I was visiting churches. People don't speak in tongues at my church during services but there are a couple who attend our church that can do it.

Most definately! It is the most wonderful experience. When you pray through and you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you have an unbeatable feeling of peace and joy. I love God so much and I love the way he has changed my life.
-
in my honest opinion it's just an overwhelming psychological phenomenon brought on by religious fervor.

Personally I think speaking in tongues is simply a response to emotion. It's a way of expressing yourself without being restricted by words. I don't believe in the whole holy spirit stuff - or even the original "everyone spoke in a foreign language" stuff. In fact, out of curiosity I once went to a pentecostal church, "spoke" in tongues and those with the "gift of discernment" did not pick up that I was faking by saying "I shove your momma in a gutter and tread on 'er" quickly and repeatedly. Cruel maybe, but it was entertaining to see how that was interpreted.

When the Holy Spirit gives the true gift of tongues you will be able to understand what that person says right down to the very dialect from where you were born. If some one claims to have the gift of tongues of Acts chapter 2 and you can not understand them, they are lying. I have seen people on t.v that say they are speaking in other tongues like in Acts chapter 2 but I could not understand a thing they said. Which means that what they were doing was a con job. The Holy Spirit will give the true gift of tongues again when the antichrist comes to this earth and His elect are delivered up before him. They don't have to think of what to say because the Holy Spirit will give them the words. If you hear someone say they are speaking in tongues like in Acts 2 and you can't understand them, they are lying. “glossolalia,” made up of two Greek words, glossa (language or tongue) and lalia (speech). It therefore means speaking in languages or tongues. Glossology is that department of anthropology which has to do with the study and classification of languages and dialects. The word glossa appears in the Greek New Testament not less than fifty times. It is used to refer to the physical organ of the tongue as in James 3:5; once in reference to the flames of fire shaped like tongues (Acts 2:3); at least once in a metaphorical sense when referring to speech as in the statement, “my tongue (speech) was glad (joyous)” (Acts 2:26). As far as I understand the remaining usages of the word it always means a language. .....Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:2-4 KJV) Filled with the Holy Spirit, the believers began to speak in other languages they neither learned nor understood. The result was that many passers-by heard the gospel proclaimed in their own languages. In bewilderment, they became convicted by the message they heard and became believers in

According to the Bible; " Then there appeared to them *divided tongues, as of fire and one sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:3 & 4 My personal interpretation of this scripture is that Spirit has its own force, energy and its own language and its own understanding that is of course apart from human, as it is not human. It can however be imparted upon and given to a human as he wishes according to the word of God by the spirit. There is also the gift of interpretation that comes upon those who desire it and is usually given along with the tongue for intrepretation. I believe in it, but I also believe that there are many people in ignorance, that not only misuse it but mistake something else for it and maybe even (without accusation) perhaps pretend to have it? That and being "slain in the spirit." Sometimes, I think that is mocked and mimicked as well. Not out of deception, but probably more out of ignorance.

Yes, and I prayed so hard to get them. But it was Gods timing and I was praying for my parents and it happened just like Jesus did. Wow, what a believer it made out of me. There is so much power in my prayers from the inside. I love to pray for people. I really had to know this was for today and God answered my prayers.
