Crib, blanket, diapers, clothes. Babies with downs have all the same needs as others.

Anything you can think of for a new baby is fine. Disposable diapers are always a hit because they'll go though lots of them. If you know the sex, you can go with blue things and pink things as appropriate. All humans have the same basic needs considering Marzlows hirarchy of needs (psychologist) and those are food, clothing and shelter. It's one of the questions we used to ask new applicants (the three basic needs for a child with a disability). Sorry for the rant!!!

How about buying a REALLY NICE Photo Album, where she can keep all those precious memories, as the years go by? Or a really nice item of designer baby jewellery? It would be nice if you could get something she will keep forever :)

Give her the same kind of gift you would to any other expecting mother. Down's synrdrome kids are more similar than different.

A bumbo!!! its a seat for infants and it allows them to sit up on the floor. I used to work at a day care and we had a disabled child and he loved it! i recomend them for any one!

A diaper cake. Not only is it cute, but once she removes the ribons she uses the diapers and other goodies included. Love the photo album idea by Dishy Diva also, that is an amazing idea!

First, congratulations to your cousin on this blessed event! Second, development (physical and cognitive) is simply delayed in DS children, so any toy or gift you'd give at any other shower will be gratefully received, I'm sure. Those toys that can be placed above the crib or playpen area are educational as well as developmental, since you asked for useful... http://www.nads.org/ has a fantastic "new parents" page

A savings bond. I love Down's Syndrome kids! They are so precious! They are masters at getting people to love them and are very loving in return. I am so happy for your cousin...what a blessing! She has been specially chosen to mother this child. I would be honored.
