  • When the umbillical cord is cut it doesn't just stay in the women. After giving birth to the child we then pass the placenta. It is then put in a bad and thrown out or the umbillical cord it sent to a storage place that the parents have payed to have it stored. Go to wikipedia and you will see what the placenta looks like it still has the remainder of the umbillical cord attached to it.
  • The doctor (or midwife) cuts the umbilical cord a few inches from the baby (it later gets trimmed shorter) and several inches from the birth canal. The baby is handed off so attention can be turned to delivering the placenta with the remains of the umbilical cord attached.
