I think it is English. And will be for a long time. Chinese is just too difficult for the rest of the world to get its head around, but young educated Chinese, who are familiar with the western script form of their language are all trying to learn English.India uses English as a lingua franca. In Indonesia, where I travel, there are English schools everywhere, and English is taught from primary school onwards. These are the three largest non-English speaking (by birth language) populations in the world. (with the USA just above Indonesia). The next four countries are Brazil, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nigeria. Only Brazil does not have English as a second language.
