I agree. Can't say that I have never used it but when I do, I use it sparingly, and I usually *do* laugh or chuckle or something. I go for "haha" a lot. I don't know how it's much better but it seems like it is to me. Bah, I don't know. =P But yeah, "lol" is pretty annoying for the most part.
-
Most overused, yes. Most annoying, no. I personally hate "ttyl" more than "lol".
-
I definitely agree. it is annoying.
-
I never really thought about it, and it does not annoy me. I feel it is a cool way of showing someone, that you find their words funny. It is either that or "ha ha" and that loses something in the translation.
-
It creates a shade of meaning that nothing else does. I try not to overuse it but sometimes there's just nothing else that fits the situation. For instance, it can't be taken sarcastically the way "ha ha" can. Plus it's easy to type.
-
a huge YES!!!
-
well i know when ever i use "lol" i am not laughing at all! i guess it is just like "don't take what i am saying seriously"
-
I don't mind it as much as the acronyms I am unfamiliar with!
-
I think almost every person I know that goes on the internet uses it more than once a day, so definitely.
-
The word "lol" is not annoying to me. Yes it is overused but it is a way to express yourself in saying that it is funny and that he/she agrees. I'm starting to wonder who made up the word "lol".
-
I believe you all are making a big deal out of nothing and it really makes me lol...ttyl... P.S. thanx for the laugh...
-
Yes, I agree with you. Even when I use it myself in IM I am not laughing out loud. When I actually laugh out loud I use stronger internet lingo like rofl or lmao. I guess I use 'lol' whenever I'm trying to make a joke.
-
i prefer "lawl" ..."roffle" is good as well
-
The only reason I will say it is NOT overused is because there are few other ways to convey what it means. It is still helpful to use if your statement might be taken too seriously or offend someone. Sometimes "lol" is useful to show a sense of humor. So, like it or not, it has its place.
-
Sorry, no. Any word that's useful is good enough for me. You could say "the" or "and" are overused. However, now that I know you don't like it, I probably will avoid posting it comments to you -- and the question does make me wonder if it might irritate others, which has a damper effect. But that's a practical concern for communicating without undue friction, rather than a blanket assessment of the word.
-
At least you can't say we avoid the big questions around here!
-
Yes, I think it's probably the most overused. It doesn't annoy me though. As davoo says, I'm not actually laughing out loud when I use it, so I suppose it is silly in that respect, but I think it helps to convey the idea that I find something amusing. I think I'll try to substitute 'hehe' for 'lol' in future. Maybe that isn't as annoying. Out of interest, what would you, Darryl, use instead of 'lol'?
-
LOL!....no.
-
yes i agree with u totally!! lol yea see it is annoying!
-
mmm... i think not, "brb" is more annoying... lol...
-
I actually think that the most annoying acronym on the net is IMHO. Most of the time, the opinion expressed is NOT humble. I am always tempted to remind people what opinions are like. Not that I object to people providing an opinion (after all, what are we doing here?) but why precede it with something as dumb as that?
-
OMG!!!!!1
-
"lol" or maybe "OMG"
-
WTF!!
-
"omg" mabye "wtf" or "lol". By the way what does "imao" mean?
-
LMFAO....why would someone ever use this...
-
lol
-
LOL not at all, i never use it!
-
I see many uses who like to use text messenging besides lol. Sometimes I cannot understand what they are saying. Yes I do feel that sometimes, it is overused.
-
Sometimes i think it is.
-
I overuse it...
-
Yes and I am guilty of this crime.
-
I think all computer lingo are overused. The reasoning, I believe, is because people are getting more and more lazy with typing the actual words out. I can say this, because I'm guilty of using LOL. Sometimes though, I just add a smile. :)
-
Lol....
-
lol... no..
-
I think people use it when they don't have anything better to say.
-
LOL doesn't bother me that much. It's a way to change the inflection of a statement made over the net, usually appropriate for helping to distinguish between something said to be funny and something said to be nasty/sarcastic. OMG is annoying if used more than once in a post, or frequently in IM conversations. I actually tend to say 'OMG' in real life than I do online. I find excessive use of !!!1!1!!1!!!!11 more obnoxious than anything else. Possibly because it usually goes with "posts lik ths wear i cant spel or use puntcuatoin!!1!!!1" or "POSTS LIK THIS IM SCREEMIN @ U OMG IM ONLINE!!1!!111!!!!ELEVENTY-ONE!11" Definitely have favorites, though: PEBKAC should be used more often and I'm quite fond of (Z)OMGWTFBBQ!, ROFLMAO and WTF. OT: Did anyone else see that commercial with the girl talking to her Mom in text/IM speak and go "You're doing it wrong!"? Because I definitely did. Srsly, who says 'IDK' IRL?
-
I don't mind it but I normally use..hehe
