I flash on an early memory. We rarely saw thunderstorms where I grew up, so my immediate thought is the curtains pulled wide open on the big picture window, nighttime, my brother and I standing on the couch looking outside, watching for lightning and listening for thunder. I must have been around 4 years old.

From my diary: This morning the sea was green but now it’s darkening. A light surf, barely perceptible reaches the edge of the sand. A bather lolls about 50 feet off shore. There is a fine rain, almost only a mist. The shelter of the terrace above keeps the moistness off me, but my outstretched toes feel a few drops, if not rain then perhaps condensation from above. I see a lightning flash in the north-eastern part of the sky and wait about ten seconds for the thunder. It is long, slow dolorous, and I’m surprised that I feel it in my body as it is very far away. I remember my lover, Michael, it was so long ago, in Maine, we sheltered in a cabin for hours during the storm, and it was wonderful. The scotch, Bells 12, neat, in heavy, old fashioned glasses, the fire, and best of all Michael, all to myself. The storm is on its way.
