Micrometers are both more precise and more accurate.

Most micrometers can be read in .0005 increments, with relative ease. Vernier calipers, because of the flexibility in their design, are normally only used as reference and shouldn't be relied on for measurements smaller than +/-.002.

If you want .001" accuracy both the vernier caliper and the micrometer are good (the micrometer is a vernier instrument too), the only problem with micrometers is that they wear out after thousands of measurements and are easy to abuse and damage, (the vernier caliper do not). Electronic calipers do not have good repetition readings since they use an indirect measurement system ((capacitance)(an electrical current)).My experience as a machinist makes me say this.
