Is it not getting a bit ridiculous when a sixty year old man must show his ID when buying beer at Wal-Mart or anywhere else, and they then must type it into a machine.

Well, at Wal-Mart (at least in SC), you only have to show ID if the cashier thinks you could be under 28. Beyond that it's not required. At least it wasn't a year and a half ago when I worked there. And there wasn't anything anybody had to sign either.
