I just replaced the head on a 1997 Mercury mystique. now it will only start and turn off rite away? does any one know what it could be?

My 1998 mercury mystique gives off one click when starting every once an awhile. What it does is i turn the key it clicks once and wont start. It takes serveral tries to get it going and sometimes it wont go at all. what could it be?
