Is it contradictory to not believe in fate, but believe that everything happens for a reason?

I don't think it is contradictory, but then again I do agree. I don't believe that we are destine for anything, but everything does happens for a reason, you still get to choose your path, but if you recognise and understands the reasons why things are happening, it is easier to see the path that you chase.

It depends on how strictly you define "fate". According to Webster's fate entails -something that unavoidably befalls a person, the decreed cause of events, and inevitably predetermined. If one uses this as a basis for arguement - then there is none. However there are some that will insist that there is some wiggle room and life and the meaning of words are more grays then black & white. The nice thing and the thing that can drive one nuts is that no one can prove you wrong.
