  • Costs are going up - they have to get the money some way, or go bust. Most airlines are very close to running at a loss. You have three choices: pay more for the basic ticket, and have services "thrown in" that you don't want; be nickel-and-dimed as you describe, or have the airline stop serving the route you want to fly because it is uneconomical. People - probably people like you - have voted with their feet. The have stopped buying tickets from so-called "full service" airlines, and switched to budget airlines, who only include that absolute minimum in the basic ticket price, and charge for all the extras: if somebody doesn't want something, they don't give it to them and charge those who do want. You see the market system at work. Would you rather have full meals, complementary hot towels and a huge baggage allowance - and pay two or three times as much? Or would you rather pay for what you use. In the first case, trave business class; in the second, put up with it.

  • Not in the least. They are a business, and business could run their business however they like. If you care not to pay the fees, there are other modes of transportation for you to take. Or, you could also choose not to go at all. I don't get upset when Burger King charges extra to King size my meal, and I don't get angry when airlines also try to make a profit on extras they will offer.
  • Nope, I have no need to be angry because I have only been on a plane about 4 times.
  • Not for having a child in your lap. I agree with the extra charge there.
  • This is one reason why I stopped flying and travelling in general. I saw all this coming a number of years ago. I don`t even have a passport anymore.
  • Yes and no. I know it is a business and they are scrambling due to fuel prices. I do not want the airlines to blanket planes with a program where EVERY seat costs the same. I do not want to pay more because someone wants to carry a lap-child on their seat or someone wants an aisle/window/exit row seat. Having a "cafeteria plan" works in many other industries and it should work in the airline industrye provided the surcharges are fair and reasonable and applied only to those that want the extras.
  • Charging for the lap child is rediculous! The child doesn't bring carryon luggage and isn't taking up seating that the airline can charge full price for. I understand why they're doing it even though I don't think it's right.
