  • Many consider the classical composer Verdi as the founder of heavy metal, if you will. He was the first to use a lot of bass and drums in his music, and it could have a metal sound to it, if you use your imagination a touch and not instantly dismiss the music. Also, he liked bass so much that he invented a new type of upright bass. It was so tall that it took two men to play. One underneath to bow, and one had to climb a ladder to do the fingering. He really has some great stuff, and you should buy a CD of his work next time you're at Borders or wherever it is you purchase your music.
  • Bill Deal & the Rhondels Maybe it's Chuck Berry.
  • Before them Cream and Jimi Hendrix could be considered forefathers as they played with a heavy sound, feedback and distortion. A year before Zepellin's debut album along came Blue Cheer. Their hit Summertime Blues is a good example of proto-metal.
  • I think the Graham Bond Organisation could be considered grandfathers of Heavy Metal. It played quite heavy songs in 1964 with a line-up of Graham Bond on organ alto sax and vocals, Jack Bruce on bass, harp and vocals, Ginger Baker on drums, and Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor sax.
