  • Any time data is compressed (as in making mp3 tracks), you lose some of the details. Whether you notice it or not depends on your sensitivity to subtleties. But compression is the way to make files small enough to download in a reasonable amount of time and to store in a reasonable amount of space. People are always coming up with better ways of digital compression, so it's hard to say specifically what's being done, other than that they're looking to find ways of reconstructing the sound from the compressed version so it sounds as much as possible like the original, uncompressed version.
