  • He is first introduced as Simon. Peter is named in five different ways in the Scriptures: by the Hebrew “Symeon,” the Greek “Simon” (from a Heb. root meaning “hear; listen”), “Peter” (a Greek name he alone bears in the Scriptures), its Semitic equivalent “Cephas” (perhaps related to the Heb. ke·phim´ [rocks] used at Job 30:6; Jer 4:29), and the combination “Simon Peter.” See Acts 15:14; Mt 10:2; 16:16; Joh 1:42. Peter was one of the earliest of Jesus’ disciples, being led to Jesus by Andrew, a disciple of John the Baptizer. (Joh 1:35-42) At this time Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Peter) (Joh 1:42; Mr 3:16), and the name was likely prophetic. Jesus, who was able to discern that Nathanael was a man “in whom there is no deceit,” could also discern Peter’s makeup. Peter, indeed, displayed rocklike qualities, especially after Jesus’ death and resurrection, becoming a strengthening influence on his fellow Christians. See Joh 1:47, 48; 2:25; Lu 22:32. • I believe it was Simon. John1:40-42
  • Simon bar Jonah (Simon son of Jonah),given the Aramaic nickname Kepha or 'little rock'( or petros in Gk) by Jesus, as a sign that upon the rock of faith, the people of God would be founded.
  • Simon in English. Shimon or Simeon in Hebrew. In the Bible, God renames people of significance and, yes, Catholics along with the greatest majority of Christians believe Jesus is God. God renames Abram to Abraham: “No longer shall you be called Abram; your name shall be Abraham, for I am making you the father of a host of nations.” (Genesis 17:5) and his wife too, Sarai to Sarah: God further said to Abraham: “As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai; her name shall be Sarah.” (Genesis 17:15) God also renames Jacob as Israel: “What is your name?” the man asked. He answered, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.” (Genesis 32:28-29) and: God said to him: “You whose name is Jacob shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” (Genesis 35:10) Matthew 16:17-19 states: Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Mark 3:14-16 states: He appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach and to have authority to drive out demons: 7 (he appointed the twelve:) Simon, whom he named Peter; ... Luke 6:13-14: When day came, he called his disciples to himself, and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, ... John 1:42: Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Kephas" (which is translated Peter). Peter or Cephas or Kephas means Rock and is much more than just a nickname. After the Gospels, Peter is never just called Simon but Simon Peter or just Peter. The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock, the first pope. The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholic Christians, the direct successor of Simon Peter. With love in Christ.
