Why can't I open, save or download files, documents or photo;s any more. When tryng to do any of the former, the files start to transfer over, but then the info cannot be found anywhere as if it has not saved or downloaded.(vista home basic) please help

I can only suggest the files are being saved at a different location in the file system. Try using say Firefox's download manager and you can click on downloaded files through it.
