I think if you call it a joke it's meant to be funny. Maybe only to a certain audience, but still meant to be funny. If I dropped a water ballon on my neighbor's head from the second floor as a joke, I would think it was funny. Maybe he wouldn't. But still, it was a joke and it was meant to be funny-to me!

Not sarcasm -- it can be funny to others, very much so, but can wreak havac on a reationship if not done carefully.

Initially, I think so. Many do not live up to that goal, though.

If you carefully examine everything we call "jokes" , there is real pain involved. But the pain happens to another. The "joke" seems to be the ability to imagine ourselves on the receiving end of the pain and we laugh because we don't feel the pain but another is. Perhaps the laughter is an expression of relief rather than cruelty. Certainly the person who is the "victim" in any joke is not happy with his/her victim role. But look at a joke and you will find pain.
