Until fairly recently copper II ions in aq. were described as having 4 water molecules coordinated to them. It is now described as hexa - coordinated. The ammonia-Cu complex is still tetra - ammine, but has 2 water molecules also-does this mean 2 isomers

I can now answer it myself!! The water molecules are less well bound( Francis, Stanford University) and are trans to each other- Francis goes on to say that one of these water molecules is less well bound than the other - water 5 coordinated
