Protected classes will vary by state, but usually include: race, gender, religion, and age (over 40). In some states, sexual orientation is also a protected class. Criminal history is not a protected class in any state.

It certainly is. A landlord may discriminate for any reason that is not specifically prohibited by law. The law does not prohibit discrimination based on being a felon.
