  • Before European intervention, Africa had several large kingdoms and a rich history. The art of Ife, for instance, is one of the great traditions of naturalistic art in the world. The Ife artists were masterful bronze casters and made amazing portraits in the 11. thru 13th centuries. Other great African cultures that existed without European "influence" are Benin, the Kongo empires, the Gana Empire, Ethiopia, the Bamum kingdom in Cameroon, to name just a few. Slavery existed even before European intervention, within the context of African rulers, and also introduced by Arab traders and invaders. Due to the European demand, especially after the colonization of America had begun, slavery became a huge activity with devastating effects for many African cultures. We have all reason to give respect to African history and culture, but there is no reason for idealization, either.
