  • The fuel you get at the gas station comes from an underground tank. This means that your fuel, in all likelihood, is relatively cool regardless of the time of day. Your car, however, is a different matter. The gas in your tank will heat up as you drive because you are more than likely driving a fuel injected vehicle today. The fuel pump runs continuously to maintain a high pressure in the gas line supplying your fuel injectors. Excess fuel during this process is continually recycled back to your gas tank. This circulation of gas through your fuel pump will cause the gas in your tank to heat up and expand as its density decreases. So, if you drove your car all day and then parked for the night somewhere, the volume of the remaining gas in your tank when you stopped for the night would be slightly greater than the volume of gas in the morning when you wake up. Technically, this means if you tanked up in the evening after stopping for the day you would use less gas in filling up your tank. This is a relatively small effect, though. You probably would never notice it without careful measuring of the gas and at any rate, you would still be getting only what you paid for at the pump. It makes no difference to your engine what the density of your gas is because your fuel injected system is controlled by a computer which monitors engine performance parameters and adjusts accordingly. So, unless the gas stations you buy your fuel from are heating their storage tanks, you have nothing wo worry about. (And I don't think gas stations are willing to run the risk involved in heating their storage tanks.)
