  • Well, if you leave the door open on a day where the temperature outside is dramatically different than inside, you could assume that your A/C or furnace is going to work full time to try to keep up with the heat gain (loss for furnace case). So this depends on how much energy/hour your A/C unit or furnace consumes. And that would determine how much money it's costing you. Just to take an example, assume your A/C unit draws 20 amps at 220V. That's about 44kW. Running continuously, that would consume 44kWh every hour. Each kWh costs about 13 cents these days (average) so that would be 44 times 13 = $5.32/hour every hour that you leave the door open. With the door closed, on average you might assume the A/C is running about half the time, or about $2.65/hour. So you're paying about about $2.65/hour to leave it open and at the same time keeping the house not as comfortable.
