I would advise following one's interests.
-
Mix the two, add ability, sprinkle in opportunity, stir, and reep the rewards.

Interest; you really don't want to put a lot of time and energy into an education or on-the-job experience to find yourself miserable, bored, unfulfilled, starting all over again 10 years later, or all the above.
-
interest...pay check will gradually come once you become an expert in that field (which means doing what you really love to do)-advice from my dad

If no one else depends on your income, then the choice is yours. If you have a family or dependents, then I think the paycheck has to be the first priority and interests second.
-
Both. And the opportunities for growth too play an important role.

-
i am too old to choose a career. i aim for the paycheck, but it has to be something i like doing.
-
a balance of both... i want to start a music career now that i lost my truck and installer/subcontractor position. its what i moved back to California to do but the specific school that i want to attend is like 70 grand for a 2 year program and i am not willing to put that much into a semi-stable job... i think i will be able to make the networking connections i need to make in order to do this on my own but i can't get off answerbag long enough to write another song... + i need inspiration first
