Catapults are any device that throws an object, although it commonly refers to the medieval siege weapon. Trebuchets are a TYPE of catapult, using gravity (with a counterweight) or traction (men pulling down), to propel the arm and often employing a sling at the end of the arm for greater distance. A trebuchet and catapult are very similar in that a catapult is any device used to throw an object, but usually refers to the medieval weapon used to throw rocks, flaming oil pots, dead animals, diseased human heads etc. A trebuchet usually uses gravity and a counterweight to throw an object, and usually has a sling on the throwing arm.
