You should 1. Change all the locks immeidately. Install new locks and install additional locks. Check all the windows, sliding doors, etc. to make sure they lock properly. 2. Have someone come in and make sure that the furnace and hot water heater are functioning properly. 3. If you have a washer and dryer, change the water supply hoses to the washer. Get the kind with the braided metal encasement on them. You do not want a flood. 4. Go under all the sinks, make sure there are no leaks in the plumbing. Above all, congratulations and enjoy not having to deal with a crazy landlord.

If you plan to paint, do it now; it’s a lot easier. Also, if it’s a two-story house, hire an HVAC company to add zoning and programmable thermostats. We did that as soon as we moved in, and a few months later we got a letter from the gas company: our usage had gone down so much from the previous owners’, they were going to shut off our service because they thought the meter was broken! Finally, I *totally* agree with getting the carpets cleaned. I wish we’d had that much foresight!
