Well first its good to recognize that its not exciting for everyone: xenophobia is the word we use describe folks who aren't at all interested in relating to people from far-off places.

But I think for most of us, we're curious about other cultures. Its interesting to see the myriad lifestyles, languages, and customs developed by the human family. It shows us the spectrum of possibilities for being human.

Another aspect is that it helps to show us who *we* are. It is said that "you don't know what it is to be an American until you leave America", but this applies to any culture. Culture is like water to a fish -- the fish doesn't ever notice the water because its the context for everything they do.

When we go to another country, or relate to those in other countries, we see ourselves reflected in the eyes of another culture. Seeing ourselves from a new perspective is always interesting, because we're always trying to get a handle on the question "who am I?".

But I think xenophobia is typical for some countries and their population.
And I think that there are not many people who are curious to other cultures because most of them think they have a superior culture anyway.
