They like the freedom the internet allows?

There's a general inattentiveness and lack of care that comes with being "overstimulated". Our modern world is constantly firing stimulation at us: television, movies, the Internet, etc. Each year the pace increases. What we don't notice is that our attention span decreases along with it. Our minds are trying to keep up with it all -- but its hopeless. Its like drinking from a firehose. Nevertheless, we end up more and more in "rush mode". We're rushing through our jobs, through our leisure, and through our communication with others. Any shortcut starts to seem like a good idea, including the items you're complaining about. What we really need to do is exactly the opposite: slow down and pay attention. The life that races by isn't really living at all. To really live, you have to be able to absorb and appreciate your experience in the moment, and that can't happen if your mind is jumping around like a monkey on hot coals.

In my mind it is either one or both of these: 1) they are being creative with the language that we know and are changing things to make it sound the same in the end, but look nowhere close to the original 2)it is one place where people can rebel and, for the most part, get away with it.

Besides the great answers that have already been said, there's a sort of escapism that can be associated with the Internet. The Internet is a different world, with its own friendships, its own way of defining your image (e.g., the colors you use when you type or the background on your MySpace), and perhaps even its own take on language. Internet acronyms were more commonplace with a more diverse group of people back when not everybody had the Internet. Acronyms and shorthand spelling were a way of being quick to keep up with the chatroom. Some people chose to cling onto that, and others decided the Internet was primarily for something else.

Because most people are just too lazy to type out the whole word. I know a lot of teens do it because it's cooler, but the adults and others do it probably because they are just too lazy.
