Help answer this question below.
Mormons believe that we have been commanded to abstain from alcoholic drinks. That being said, every Mormon is free to drink alcohol if they so desired, just as they are free to act contrary to any other commandment.
Do Mormons follow Jesus? Jesus drank wine. His first miracle was turning water into wine. Wine was served at the final passover he celebrated with his disciples? There was a group of dedicated people in the scriptures called Nazarties who didn't drink any product of the vine and did not cut their hair, however they took this vow upon themselves.
My view on this subject is a little different. I believe that if all of our members truly followed the doctrine of the church, then there wouldn't be any fat members of the church. The reasoning behind no alcohol is anyone drinking it might drink it in excess and therefore be under the influence of it. The person is then unable to make clear decisions, and might do something stupid. Why is it excepted to use food as a vice? It is used the same way as alcohol, and drugs everyday and yet it is not talked about. I feel that it is up to the individual person, not the church, to make the decision if they should have alcohol. If you can't just have one beer, then you should not drink. But by that same reasoning if you do not have portion control, then you should seek help with your eating. My whole point is, to find out if something is really bad, then you need to pray about it. Thats the only way to find the true right answer.
Are we allowed alcohol? Well, no-one has a gun to our heads, but the doctrine is clear: God has said (in 1833) that it isn't good for us to drink "wine or strong drink".
It wasn't a commandment in Bible times. Why was it OK then and not now? God knows best, but probably they didn't have such problems as drink driving or spiked drinks, and less people were raped while drunk (although there were still some - and the Bible does discourage getting drunk).
Also, note that God said in 1833 that this was "adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest". Some people just can't handle alcohol (or other drugs). God wouldn't want us to find out the hard way.
Within the standards of the Church? No.
However, you do get those who claim to be LDS, staggering around with a lampshade on their head, completely hammered. They really aren't LDS.
If you do find someone running around with a lampshade on their head, and they're NOT drunk, THEY'RE probably LDS.
The thing is, people (frankly) get stupid when they drink. We don't need it. We can drink WATER and be just as idiotic, but we can always snap back into reality if need be. Those who are drunk can't.
How do you stop a mormon drinking all the beer at your party? Invite 2
Mormons observe the "Word of Wisdom" and are free to act as they see fit, those who keep the "Word of Wisdom" recieve blessings of health, those who dont do not.
According to D&C 89, we are to abstain from alcohol except for the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, and in that case it should be of our own making. Another section informs us the actual emblems used in the Sacrament don't matter as long as it's done in remembrance of Jesus' Atonement. It is now most common to use water.
As others have said, the Church is made up of individuals who don't always follow everything the Church teaches.
If god said not to drink Alcohol in 1833. Why were there Mormon Brewing companies, Distilleries, Saloons, and Even ZCMI(Church owned department store) had a liquor department? From about 1850 until prohibition hit in 1933, Utah had just as much liquor and beer running through its veins as any western territory or state. . "Valley Tan" was one of Brigham Youngs favorite "tonic remedies". In the 1860's The LDS church owned and ran one of Utah largest drinking and gaming houses. Heber C Kimball operated this establishment, "Salt Lake House", while an Apostle of the church. Even the Great Saltair in its hay day sold alcohol and tea, while owned by the Mormons. If you look into Utah State history, and history taught within the Church, there are contrary accounts.

Nope, D & C 89 states that it is not good to use strong drink.

Is a great article covering from the Bible the topic of alcohol and the Christian. Also covers whether Jesus drank alcoholic wine or not.
Are Mormons allowed to drink alcohol? Allowed by whom? If they choose to drink alcohol, they will one day answer to the Lord. The Church does not have an alcohol police, checking every bar, or saloon, or nightclub, etc where alcohol is sold or available. But when they come in for a Temple Recommend Interview they will be ask if they keep the Word of Wisdom. Their answer whether, yes or no, will be recorded in heaven and they will have to face the Lord himself for his approval, to enter heaven. However if they answer no, the Bishop is bound to inquire as to what extent the Word of wisdom is not kept. A no answer does not always mean alcohol. But the Bishop is a Judge in Israel and has the right and authority to approve or disapprove a Temple Recommend, for whatever he feels is right. The Stake President is also a Judge in Israel and he must also approve a Recommend. So each individual is given two chances to tell the truth and receive spiritual confirmation from both men of God. Or be encouraged to repent as needed through inspiration from the Lord. It is really a matter between the individual and the Lord. And one way or another the Lord always wins...Later
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints should avoid use of alcohol--because it's harmful and it's hard to make good choices under the influence of alcohol.

Right...kinda like how I am free to commit murder. It is really interesting to hear a mormon talk about freedom...it betrays the religions early cult-roots. Anyway, the Word of Wisdom states that barley is to be used for the making of mild drinks, so I have no idea why later prophets decided that god changed his mind later and said "no beer." Actually I DO know why. Mormonism is an infomercial. EVERYTHING that they do is an attempt to promote an image of success. Missionaries are to be clean cut, no tattoos no piercings no radical hairdos, suit and tie, leather scripture set, etc. Church meetings are testimonials, just like in infomercials, where people stand up and talk about how well the product is working for them. And people on the outside WANT THAT SUCCESS. People want to be a part of something grand. So they join. And they pay money, because if you don't pay tithing you can't go to the temple, and you can't get to the top heaven unless you've done the temple. Pyramid scheme

Wow. I searched the internet because i heard a funny Mormon joke on The Office and i was trying to find where they got the material from. I wasn't prepared to be blindsided by this. Answerbag owes you a new member. Do you enjoy spreading stuff about other religions? And i can tell you've never been to an actual sacrament, or you would know that testimony meetings are not the regular meetings. I'm not going to attack you or what you said. But I am going to say that while some people seem to enjoy finding new ways to hate the Mormon church, that church does nothing but teach teir understanding of Christ. And tithes are required by the bible--read it. And the top two areas that money is spent on is humanitarian causes and far behind is education. Sheesh, stop wasting your time hating people you don't even know.

HA HA HA HA HA...I was LDS for 15 years. "And i can tell you've never been to an actual sacrament, or you would know that testimony meetings are not the regular meetings" Well, I DIDN'T actually say that, DID I. Even the regular meetings are testimonials, they just have SCHEDULED speakers instead of impromptu speakers. I stand by my statement, emphatically.
.
The Mormon church does MUCH MORE than just teach its understanding. It comes to my doorstep, it encourages voting blocs, and it suckers people out of their money. And as far as your claim that tithing is spent on humanitarian efforts, well, you don't know that because the church doesn't publish that information and they haven't for DECADES. You have assumed that, wrongly. In 1995, Hinckley told Time magazine that 70% of tithing goes to the building and maintaining of church buildings and to fund LOCAL church activities, some is spent on charity, and that the rest is put away "for a rainy day."

"Anyway, the Word of Wisdom states that barley is to be used for the making of mild drinks,"
Some people think this was a referance to beer, but we later latter-day saints know that it's talking about Pero and Postum very good for you. ;^)
