The Romans crucified people for 800 years and there were many variations of it but they did indeed involve two poles fixed together.

Spreading the arms and hanging from them makes the chest work harder. It has been proven (History or Discovery channel) that it's torcherous, and will normally kill relatively quickly.

Yes, if Yeshua really was crucified, the cross was most likely a T shape, possibly a single stake. This shape has been tested. I doubt the Romans themselves made the crosses, at least not the citizens. It would have been prisoners or slaves that did such work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crucifixion#Details_of_crucifixion The Latin Cross shape has other orgins: http://www.answers.com/topic/christian-cross

As someone who studied Roman life & times.............yes it was always a T section they used for crucifixation, easier to make, stronger, the body didn't twist it askew as would be the case in a crossed t as always shown in christianity.........who knows why this version was chosen, it certainly was not used by the Romans.

The Romans used any number of crosses, from the Tau, to the St Andrew's X to simple stakes, to nailing the prisoner to walls and structures. The Tau cross was originally used because the tau, or ankh, was a symbol of eternal life. They enjoyed the irony of killing with such a device.

The Bible clearly and undeniably teaches that Jesus died on a cross (Matthew 27:32,40,42; Mark 15:21,30,32; Luke 23:26; John 19:17,19,25; Acts 2:23; 1 Corinthians 1:17-18; Colossians 1:20; 2:14-15). The Greek words in those Scriptures specifically identify a cross, not a pole or stake. The most common method of execution by the Romans in Jesus’ time was crucifying a person on a cross, with nails through their hands/wrists and feet/ankles. Sometimes people were tied to the cross in addition to being nailed to it. There were instances where people were crucified to poles, stakes, trees, x-shaped crosses, etc. But this was not the case with Jesus – He was crucified on a cross.
