  • You could rent a truck OR borrow one from a friend OR ask your future employer to borrow one OR, if you went to school ask the school if you could rent the one you drove, BUT AND it is a HUGE BUT: You have to know the vehicle's engine and its components backwards and forwards, top to bottom, side-to-side. Why do I mention this? I KNOW, for a fact, when I took my exam, at the time of the pre-trip, vehicle inspection, THE VERY FIRST thing I had to do was name the various parts of the engine AND what they did! I was told to "take as much time as you need" to complete the inspection. Once you get behind the wheel and do the necessary paperwork, we can proceed for the road test." It took 45 minutes for me to do the pre-trip. Needless to say, I passed - with flying colors. AFTER the examiner signed the paper work, he said to me, "Ron, you'll do OK in the business. You're attentive and give a damn. A LOT of the people who come in here think they are just going to get behind the wheel, answer a few Qs and go for a little trip. THE TOUGHEST PART is doing the pre-vehicle inspection. I can't tell you how many times they come in here, walk around the vehicle, say, "OK, let's go!" and they fail because of what they didn't do." Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed doing my best to answer it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name! Sources: My wonderful family! Was in the freight-forwarding business 6 years. • I used a great company who rents a short wheel based tractor and 28ft tag-along trailer. The guy assisted me with the practice and got me straightened out on the in-cab airbrake inspection and the pre-trip. I passed the 1st time. They are in Sacramento, Ca.
