The word boogyman comes from a group of pirates that occupied the seas around Sumatra. This was one of the worst seas in the world for cargo ships to pass through and the pirates were greatly feared. They were actually called 'bugi' pirates and the word became synonymous with fear, hence the 'boogyman', but the spelling changed at some point.
