Why do some electrical appliances say not to plug them in extension cords? What happens if I do?

It's to do with the amount of power needed to run the device. If it draws a lot of current it may be deemed unsafe to run it through a 25 metre extension. I personally choose to ignore this things and use extension if necessary and have survived to tell the tale. As a disclaimer though, I'm not suggesting you do the same!!
