  • The strongest stuff is the prescription narcotic syrup, it actually supresses your cough reflex. Other than that you can try the Dellysum (sp?) sold at pharmacies.
  • If you'd like a cough suppressant but don't want cough medicine, you could try eating some dark chocolate (the more cocao the better...apparently, there's some substance in cocao that suppresses the cough reaction in the back of the throat). Good luck with the cold.
  • Elecampane or Horse-heal (Inula helenium) infused in honey is the best natural cough suppressant you can make. Cut up some of the root, put it in a jar, fill with honey. turn over every day. After a few days or a week, it's ready. Just use the honey. Sometimes you can find the tincture or extract in health food stores. Or make some cough drink: 1. Boil a quart of water in a saucepan. 2. When it comes to a boil add 2 tablespoons of dried Elecampane root. 3. Turn down to a simmer and do so for 20 minutes. 4. Add honey to taste. Honey heals and soothes as well. 5. Add a splash of lemon juice as well if you have it. 6. Strain and drink your natural cough remedy. But don't use if you are pregnant.
  • Two things to try: Mix honey and cinnamon together and eat a spoonful. It works surprisingly well to help with cough. Mix honey, lemon juice, and whiskey together. Whiskey numbs the throat, lemon cuts phlegm, and honey is a sweetener, a soother, and a natural cough suppressant. Aris usually comes down with a major bout of bronchitis every year, to the point of needing codeine. This year I nursed him with both of those, and it was not nearly as bad of a case.
  • Cepacol ALWAYS works for me.
