It means you need to have your brakes serviced, even if you aren't noticing any brake problem. It could be a problem, or it could just come on at certain mileage intervals automatically. You might be able to get some info on this by calling your local Buick dealer and asking for the service department.

They used to call these dummy lights because only a dummy would react to it, if after a thorough brake inspection all is fine then don't worry. Make sure the mechanic is well qualified. There may be a sensor indicating brake wear or that the hydraulics are beginning to fail or the master cylinder.

Before spending a ton of money to the repair shop, check your brake fluid level. There's a sensor to tell you it's low. If it is low and filling it up to the proper level shuts the brake light off, good. Now why is it low? Your pads/shoes could be very low or you could have a leaking cylinder.

If the brakes aren't grinding. You might just be low on brake fluid. Check the master cylinder.

Its a sure sign something is not correct with the braking system. most automobiles have a back-up braking system, that will work for a short time. If the braking light comes on, do not take a chance and ignore it. it could mean definite trouble down the road.

when the brake light comes on and stays on it could be one of two things 1- the switch on the emergency brake might be stuck on (make sure the e-brake pedal is up all the way 2- you may have a problem in the Hydraulic system (fluid leaking at the wheel cyls or calipers or bleeding past the seals in the master cyl)

I have a similar problem on my 93 LeSabre. The E-brake warning lamp and bell come on as I start driving even with the e-brake completely released (no dragging sensation from rear wheels). At first I thought it was the e-brake position sensor but I notice it worked as expected, that is, the light comes on only when the e-brake is applied. I also notice the light and bell come on when I accelerate and often turn off when I decelerate. I'm beginning to think this is some kind of accelerometer that works in tandem with the e-brake position sensor. I wouldn't mind the light, but the bell is pretty annoying. I'm gonna have to look at a Hayne's or Chilton's wiring diagram.

The light comes on for 3 reasons. Park brake on, Brake fluid low or system failure. Check the park brake first, Pull up on it to see if you can make the light go out. Then I check the fluid level in the master cylinder. If it is up to the full line then the float in the master cylinder may be sinking. To bypass the fluid level switch, disconnect the connector from the brake fluid reservoir and use a paper clip to jump across the two pins with wires in them of the connector. This will tell the brake system the reservoir is full all the time. If it is still on, have your brakes checked soon, they could fail. Thats never good. Good Luck and be careful
