True. "NEVER FEED YOUR BIRD CHOCOLATE. It's poisonous to them. So is avocado and hence guacamole (parts of the fruit are toxic). No alcohol. No caffeine. No lead, no cigarette butts (cigarette smoke is bad, too). Watch out for poisonous houseplants, too. NEVER USE TEFLON COOKWARE IN A HOUSE WITH BIRDS"

True, however no animal besides man can eat avocados, they will kill anything smaller than a cow and make any other animal really sick. A general rule for all pets is never feed them avocados, chocolate, or alcohol.

Avocado is toxic to birds however, there is some debate on HOW toxic it is. There are some people who've 'accidentally offered their birds a tiny amount of avocado & the bird is fine. This doesn't mean you should do it. It IS toxic but not only that it's extremely high in fat, it'd be like offering the bird a dish full of oil, you kill the bird anyway! Chocolate is toxic, non stick cookware gives off fumes at a certain temp (I think over 300c) but because parrots are highly sensitive to the environment no stick cook ware can do your bird more harm than good even if you don't burn the pan. Food cooked in non stick pans have shown some of the teflon toxins in it. If you fork out the money & buy good quality stainless steals pot sets then not only will you be keeping your bird safe but you not be throwing away pans because you've burnt them. Top quality pans will last a very long time & are easy to clean if the quality is good.

It has killed quite a few parrots, some have been okay. Better to not risk it and keep them away from it.

This morning in my garden in La Lucia, South Africa I filmed a black headed bulbul eating an avocado hanging from the avocado tree outside my bedroom window. It is still alive!

Avocado in the wild eaten by wild birds is often fine because they learned not to eat the pit. The problem with a human feeding it is you can not be sure you have removed it properly and no pit exposure is in taken by the bird. Be safe just don't feed them at all. You have many options in fresh feeding and can totally avoid this fruit.

I've been around birds my entire life... BE VERY careful of any type of aerosol sprays too! The comment above about teflon coated pans is a very good point as well!

I think the truthful answer is...Nobody knows for sure! It's like the person who says he/she new a guy who had a friend who raised parrots and one day found one of them dead. The only thing it had that day was a piece of an avocado. Must have been the avocado. BEWARE, AVOCADO'S ARE LETHAL TO PARROTS. (And all the while the cat is smiling. He got a little taste of that avocado, too!)

I think if I never knew the answer to this question, it would be totally ok. But parrots are definitely cute!
